Your First Sahara Tour: From the Road to the Dunes

The desert experience starts well before you reach the sand. The journey through mountain passes, kasbah country and oasis valleys is part of the trip. Knowing how the route and camp stay work helps you arrive with realistic expectations.

Choose the desert by the whole route

Merzouga is the village gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes in eastern Morocco. Mhamid provides access to another desert region, with journeys towards Erg Chigaga generally involving an off-road transfer. These are different routes, rather than interchangeable names for the same overnight stop.

Choose according to your available days, departure city and tolerance for driving. If Merzouga is the main goal from Marrakech, allow time for overnight stops along the way. Ask to see the full schedule, including the return or onward journey, before comparing packages.

Understand the arrival and camp transfer

You may leave your main vehicle or larger luggage at a meeting point before continuing to camp. The final transfer could involve a camel ride or a vehicle, depending on the camp and agreed arrangements. Confirm the timing and alternatives in advance, especially if you prefer not to ride.

Sunset is a popular time to be near the dunes, but arrival depends on the route and conditions. Avoid treating a sunset photograph as a guaranteed appointment. A comfortable journey gives the driver room to manage stops and reach the transfer point without rushing.

Ask what a camp night actually includes

Camps vary considerably. Ask whether your tent is private, whether the bathroom is shared or ensuite, how electricity works and what bedding is provided. If a particular comfort matters to you, request confirmation rather than relying on a label such as luxury.

A stay often includes dinner and breakfast, but check your proposal. Music may be part of the evening; do not assume it is offered at every camp or every night. Wind, clouds and moonlight also change the experience, so stars and perfectly clear skies are never a promise.

Pack for the transfer and the night

Keep a small overnight bag easy to reach. Useful items include a warm layer, sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a refillable water bottle, a torch and closed shoes for walking on uneven ground. Sand gets into open bags quickly, so keep your phone and camera protected when you are not using them.

Temperatures can change sharply between daytime and night. Check the forecast close to departure and ask your host about current camp conditions. Bring the things you need overnight with you; large suitcases may remain elsewhere during the transfer.

Leave room for a quiet morning

If your schedule allows, wake early for a short walk or simply sit and watch the light change. Follow the camp team's advice on where to go and arrange any longer outing with a guide. Before leaving, make sure you know the breakfast time, luggage collection plan and next overnight stop.
