Marrakech to Merzouga: Make the Road Part of the Journey
The road from Marrakech to Merzouga links some of Morocco's most striking landscapes. It also involves long stretches in a vehicle. Breaking the journey into manageable days makes the stops feel like places to explore, rather than names checked off through the window.

The High Atlas: leave space for the crossing
Routes towards Ouarzazate commonly cross the High Atlas through the Tizi n'Tichka pass. The landscape shifts as the road climbs, with bends, viewpoints and villages along the way. Plan the crossing as a substantial part of the day, especially if you want to stop for photographs.
A winding mountain road is a reason to keep the schedule generous. Ask about likely driving time for your actual itinerary, including breaks. Conditions and traffic can change, so a map estimate should not become a deadline for the next visit.
Ait Ben Haddou: walk, rather than glance
Ait Ben Haddou is a ksar: a group of earthen buildings within a fortified settlement, rather than one standalone kasbah. UNESCO recognises the site for its southern Moroccan earthen architecture. A visit is more rewarding when you allow time to walk the lanes and understand the setting.
Discuss the walking route with your guide if steps or uneven surfaces are difficult for you. The approach and upper paths are not equally easy for everyone. Carry water, keep your bag light and allow time to pause rather than rushing straight to a viewpoint.
Ouarzazate and the valleys: choose what interests you
Ouarzazate is a useful point to pause before continuing east. Depending on your interests, your schedule might include a kasbah visit, a film-related stop or simply lunch and a comfortable overnight stay. Adding every option is not necessary to have a worthwhile day.
Further along the route, the Dades Valley offers villages, cultivated land and mountain scenery. An overnight in the valley can turn a driving corridor into part of the experience. Confirm whether your accommodation is in the valley itself and how much exploring time the itinerary allows.
Todra Gorge: a short visit or a longer walk
Near Tinghir, Todra Gorge offers a striking change of scale, with rock walls rising above the valley floor. Some visitors prefer a brief walk; others want a guided outing with more time in the surrounding area. Tell your planner which version interests you so the stop is scheduled accordingly.
Keep the day realistic if you are continuing to Merzouga. A longer gorge walk and a late desert transfer may compete for the same hours. Adding a night can be a better solution than shortening every experience to fit a crowded day.
Merzouga: arrive with time to settle in
The final stage leads towards the Erg Chebbi dunes. Confirm where you meet the camp team, how the last transfer works and what luggage to take. It is easier to enjoy the arrival when those details are settled before leaving your previous overnight stop.
If your journey continues to Fes, look at the onward driving day as carefully as the approach from Marrakech. If you return to Marrakech, consider how the return is divided. A good desert itinerary gives attention to both halves of the journey.
